Effective Immediately - Zero Tolerance Policy in Regard to Any Inappropriate Behavior Towards Referees

A letter from the League Commissioner

As you are aware we have a severe shortage of referees, due in large part to the abuse they are subjected to by coaches, players and sidelines. The behavior towards referees has to change. For the past several years UYSA has restricted the sidelines of many teams to ZERO spectators at games when there have been reports of parents and sidelines making inappropriate remarks, harassment towards referees, or refusal to follow a referee's instructions. However, it seems that hasn’t been enough to curb the growing number of games where referees are being subjected to verbal and sometimes physical abuse.   

Effective immediately UYSA will enforce a ZERO TOLERANCE policy in regard to any inappropriate behavior towards referees.   

Under the directions of the President of the Association for the remainder of the Spring 2022 season, any coach, parent or spectator at the field that berates a referee, will result in a strict no spectator season going forward. Meaning - that team will not be allowed to have ANY spectators on the sideline for the remainder of the Spring season. 

A coach has the responsibility to coach the players, and you as a parent or spectator on the sideline have the responsibility to cheer for your player and their teammates.  At no time does your role cross over to being a referee mentor or educator, regardless of your knowledge or understanding of the game. That role belongs to the State Referee Committee.   

DO NOT tell the referee “to call the game”, “to keep the kids safe”, to “call it both ways”, that they “are a terrible referee”, that “you are going to file a complaint” (you can file a complaint - but there is no reason to yell this at a referee as it is viewed as a threat), or any other derogatory or personal, public or provocative remarks directed at the referee. 

There are no excuses - if you are making any remark towards a referee, you are at risk for the entire sideline being uninvited the rest of the season. You put your team at risk of game stoppage and forfeit, and other potential outcomes as adjudicated by the league. 

How will this be enforced? - the referees assigned to the games will be told that Team X is not allowed to have ANY spectators within 100 yards of the field, or the game will be forfeited by the team.

Como ya saben tenemos una faltante severa de referis, debido en gran medida al abuso que están expuestos por entrenadores, jugadores y alrededores de la cancha (incluido el banco de suplentes). El comportamiento hacia los referis tiene que cambiar. For los últimos años la UYSA ha restringido los alrededores de la cancha a CERO espectadores en los juegos cuando se han reportado de padres y alrededores haciendo observaciones inapropiadas, acoso hacia los referis, o reusarse a seguir las indicaciones de los referis. Sin embargo, parece que no ha sido lo suficiente para cambiar la cantidad de partidos donde los referis han sido sujeto de abuso verbal y a veces físico.

Se hace efectivo inmediatamente, UYSA reforzara la política de TOLERANCIA CERO en relación a cualquier comportamiento inapropiado hacia los referis.

Bajo las directivas del Presidente de la Asociación por lo que resta de la temporada de Primavera 2022, cualquier entrenador, padre o espectador en el campo de juego que reprenda al referí, resultará en una temporada estricta sin espectadores en lo que resta. Significa - que al equipo no se le permitirá NINGÚN espectador al lado de la cancha por lo que resta de la temporada de Primavera.

El entrenador tiene la responsabilidad de dirigir a los jugadores, y ustedes como padres o espectadores al costado de la cancha tienen la responsabilidad de alentar por su jugador y sus compañeros de equipo. En ningún momento su rol cambia a ser el mentor o educador del referí, sin importar su conocimiento o comprensión del juego. Ese rol es para el Comité de Referís Estatal.

NO le digan al referí "que suspenda el juego", "mantener a los niños a salvo", "que suspenda el partido para ambos equipos", y que son "árbitros terribles", que "van a llenar una queja formal" (pueden llenar una queja formal - pero no hay razón para gritarle al referí ya que se ve como amenaza), o cualquier otro comentario despectivo o personal, público u observaciones provocativas dirigidas al referi.

No hay excusas - si se está haciendo cualquier observación al referí, usted está poniendo en riesgo y a la totalidad de la gente alrededor de la cancha de ser no invitados por el resto de la temporada. Usted está poniendo a su equipo en riesgo de interrupción del juego y pérdida, y algún otra decisión potencial que la liga le mande.

Como se llevará a cabo esto? - Los referís asignados a estos partidos serán advertidos que el Equipo X no tiene permitido NINGÚN espectador a 100 yardas del campo de juego, o el partido se dará por perdido a ese equipo.

Dejemos que los niños jueguen, dejemos que los niños jueguen y que los referis arbitren - es su juego no el suyo!
