Utah Youth Soccer Association Announces Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Legacy Fields Soccer Complex at Shivwits Thanks to Lease Agreement with The Shivwits Band of Paiutes

Ivins, UT – 02/22/2021

Utah Youth Soccer Association (UYSA), the leader in promoting, developing, and governing youth soccer in Utah, is pleased to announce a groundbreaking ceremony for The Legacy Fields Soccer Complex at Shivwits. The ceremony will take place on land adjacent to the Shivwits Convenience Store, home of the new soccer complex at 5861 W Old Hwy 91 in Ivins, UT 84738 on Thursday, March 4th at 3 p.m.

This free event will include welcoming comments from key stakeholders, a blessing from Shivwits Band members, refreshments, and shovels in the ground.

The Shivwits Soccer Complex is the Legacy Field Project's inaugural facility. The 19-acre complex will feature four full-size fields allowing for more than 1,800 matches annually for Utah teams in Washington and Iron counties and Nevada teams from Mesquite. The facility will also potentially host nine UYSA-sanctioned tournaments each year.

“After four years of conversations with The Shivwits Band around the possibilities and potential for this complex, we are so excited to see things moving forward. The dream of more fields and additional opportunities to play for our Region 6 youth players is becoming a reality,” says Bryan Attridge CEO, UYSA. “I would like to thank The Shivwits Band for its contribution to local youth. We are excited to see this project come to life and we hope it will be a catalyst for our Northern Regions and a provide a spark for more development for our players and the sport of soccer in Utah.”

The Shivwits Band and UYSA have agreed to a 25-year lease agreement for the complex to ensure its perpetual existence and many years of cooperative efforts by the Band and UYSA to benefit local youth. While UYSA’s Region 6 (Fillmore, UT to Mesquite, NV) will have priority for usage during Spring and Fall soccer seasons. Region 6 membership will also have priority to utilize the complex for tournaments and other programming. Rental fees for events at the complex will be split between The Shivwits Band and Region 6 and will provide the tribe with an additional revenue source. The Shivwits Band will also utilize the complex for its own gatherings and events. The Shivwits Band will provide water for the facility and UYSA’s Region 6 will be responsible for maintenance and operations.

Utah Youth Soccer Association (UYSA) is a non-profit corporation established January 9, 1978 and holds tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. The organization is also registered as a charitable institution under the Utah State Tax Commission code. As a result, the Association is not operated for personal or corporate gain; rather, it is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors solely for the benefit of Utah’s children.

UYSA is sanctioned by the U.S. Soccer Federation and US Youth Soccer to be the governing body of soccer in Utah. UYSA is also recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee as the governing body for youth soccer in Utah. Reaching over 50,000 players across the state, UYSA is the only soccer organization in Utah that offers a diverse range of services and innovative programs to meet the needs of a membership with varied abilities, backgrounds, and financial means.

Legacy Fields Project is a major initiative by UYSA to provide long-term solution to a consistent and growing issue: the need to provide quality field space for youth soccer. The fees collected under the Legacy Fields Project are restricted funds that can ONLY be used for field development in the region in which they are collected. This ensures that the fees are spent for the benefit of the players and for the long-term development of fields in that region.

The Shivwits Band of Paiutes has been a sovereign Indian tribe since time immemorial. Headquartered today on the Band’s Reservation Northwest of St. George, Utah, the Shivwits Band was formerly recognized by the United States in 1940 when the Band chose to organize its government pursuant to the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. Regrettably in 1954 Congress terminated the federally-recognized Tribal status of the Shivwits Band and the related federal trust responsibility to the Band. Thankfully, however, Congress took action in 1980 to restore the Shivwits Band of Paiutes as a federally-recognized Tribe when it passed the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah Restoration Act. In the Restoration Act, the federal trust relationship was confirmed as to the Shivwits Band: the Band was restored to its Tribal status prior to termination and was made eligible again for federal services.
